The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:1–7:29, is on the theme of discipleship. Jesus “sat down” Matthew 5:1, which was the correct posture for formal teaching. He “began to teach them [his disciples].” Matthew 5:2 His audience clearly was insiders. The beatitudes, the “Blessed is, blessed are” of Matthew chapter 5, are the most famous part of the Sermon on the Mount. However, “Blessed” is not the best translation of the Greek word—makarios.
